I’ve never tried growing anemones before this year, and honestly, I was a little scared to try. They seem almost surreal with their silky petals and jewel-like centers. But when I spotted a bag of anemone tubers at Aldi last spring, I couldn’t resist picking it up.
I planted them outdoors in May in my Tender Tuber garden, tucked between the cannas and dahlias. By then, I had already missed the ideal start time. In my zone (6b), anemones should be started in February. Still, I decided to plant them anyway just to see what they would do.
To my delight, I got one bloom in August and another in September. Woo hoo! After frost, I plan to dig them up and store them in my basement for the winter. Next year I’ll start them much earlier and see if that makes a difference.
I also ordered some more anemones from Tulip World, which should arrive at the right planting time. So next year I’ll have both the Aldi tubers and the new ones to compare.
It was fun to see this beautiful bloom popping up unexpectedly in my Tender Tuber garden—a sweet surprise. An anemone is not your enemy, and I’m hoping they’ll be my friends and give me many more blooms next year!
Tip: If you’re in Zone 6b, try starting anemones in February indoors so they’re ready to bloom once spring arrives.
