August Mornings in the Garden

This August, I’ve fallen into the the habit of slipping outside at dawn to greet my gardens. The air is cool, the light is soft, and it’s the perfect time to check on the blooms before the day’s heat arrives.

With this recent heat spell, I’ve been watering early in the morning… and often again in the evening… just to keep my precious flowers happy. Sometimes, before I turn on the hose, I wander through with my camera, capturing favorite blossoms in all their glory. Later, I’ll turn those photos into a slideshow for my TV screensaver — a little piece of summer that lingers long after the petals fade.

I thought about making a complete list of everything in bloom, but I suspect that might be more interesting for me than for you! Instead, you can see some of my favorites in the photos below.

The funny thing about being a cut flower farmer is that my best blooms often leave the garden in someone else’s bouquet. It means I don’t always have as many flowers left to admire in the beds — but that’s why I take so many pictures. It’s my way of keeping them with me, even after they’ve been cut and sold.

Do you have a favorite time of day to enjoy your garden?
